Rules

Rules for Man of the Cliff are subject to change, as are events. Please take a look at the rules for each event and feel free to email with any questions.

Hatchet Throw

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Prl3YFep7TE

Throwing axes will be provided and shall be used by all contestants to ensure uniformity.  Initial rounds will utilize the Cold Steel Bad Axe (http://www.coldsteel.com/badaxe.html).   Sharpening blocks will be provided should a contestant wish to sharpen the axe before competing.  Final and championship rounds may use large axes such as sold by Baileys here: http://www.baileysonline.com/itemdetail.asp?item=41035&catID
Contestants will be allowed multiple sets (exact number to be finalized based on number of contestants registered and time constraints) of four throws from behind a line 20 feet from the target for the men and 15 feet from the target for the women. Contestants may throw from further back from the line as long as they are within the event boundaries.
Targets will be painted with multiple scoring rings centered on a bulls-eye approximately five (5) feet above ground level. Contestants will rotate through so that all contestants will complete their first set before the first contestant throws their second round. Each set will be scored separately and the candidates total score will be determined by dropping the contestants lowest score and totaling the remaining scores.
Points of scoring will be awarded by judges and will be clarified prior to the start of the event.  A cut line between circles is awarded the higher circle points.
If a competitor's foot hits the ground past the throwing line before the axe hits the wood, that particular throw will receive a "no score".
Ties will be broken by single-elimination throw off.  Each contestant will be allowed to throw four axes with the total score of all four throws used to determine the winner.  Throw offs shall continue until a single winner is determined.
 Recurve Bow Archery

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtTyOf8OCKg

Bows will be provided and classic recurve bows. There are four bows to choose from with draw weights range from 25# to 48#.  No compound bows will be allowed. Bows shall be bare with no sights, markings on limbs, etc. Arrows will be provided to ensure consistency between competitors.
Please note that all bows provided are right-handed bows.  If you would like to bring a left-handed recurve bow, you will be allowed to use your own as long as no markings or sights are used.
Targets will be large plastic-covered bales with a single bullseye
Scoring arrows must remain in the target and not fall or be knocked out by other arrows or other conditions.
Points of scoring will be awarded by judges and will be clarified prior to the start of the event.  A cut line between circles is awarded the higher circle points.
Competitors will rotate turns through three separate rounds. All archers will shoot from a 20 foot distance during the first round, a 35 foot distance during the second round and a 50 foot distance during the third round. Archers will shoot 4 arrows each round
The cumulative score of the three rounds is tallied and ranked.
Tie breakers will consist of single-elimination round where each competitor shoots four arrows from a distance of 50 feet and takes the total score of all four arrows.  Tie breaking rounds shall continue until a single winner is determined.

Speed Chopping

Contestants will be provided axes and sharpening stones to be shared amongst all contestants.
Contestants shall be allowed a limited period of time to chose and arrange four logs from the logs provided. Upon notification by the official, contestants shall quarter each log sequentially (quarter log one before moving on to log two).  In the first round candidates will be timed and a percentage of the field with the shortest time so split 4 logs will continue on to the next round (% to be announced at the even based on the number of participants).
The second round will take place as the first, except contestants will be timed chopping 5 logs. Again, each log shall be quartered before moving to the next log. Candidates will again be timed and a small percentage of candidates with the shortest times shall advance to the final round (% to be announced at the even based on the number of participants). In the event of a tie, the additional candidates tied with the first or second place candidate shall also advance.
The third round shall be scored based on how many logs each competitor can chop in 60 seconds. Again, each log shall be quartered before moving to the next log.
Tie breakers will consist of single-elimination rounds and shall continue until a single winner is determined.

Caber Toss

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZOeHoyNd6c

Each competitor is allowed three attempts, all of which should be scored and the best of these to be used to determine placing. The attempts may be taken simultaneously or the competitors may choose to allow other contestants to take turns between their attempts.
The attempt begins when the competitor lifts the caber from the ground. If the competitor drops the small end of the caber back to the ground after having picked it up, this shall count as one attempt
The competitor may take a short approach run but may not cross the foul line before releasing the caber.
Hay bales will be placed in the landing area in a semi-circle with gaps between each of the hay bales.  Scoring shall be based on which gap the caber falls into with the gap directly ahead (at 12:00 on a clock) being worth the most points and each of the gaps to each side (down to 9:00 and 3:00 on a clock) being worth successively less.
In order to score, the caber must pass through the vertical position (90 degrees from the ground) in order to count as a turned caber. In other words, the end of the caber that starts in the competitors hands must flip over the other end and land further away from the competitor than the end that is not held.  If this is confusing, check out the videos we’ve posted on youtube – it is easier than it sounds.
Multiple caber sizes will be utilized with smaller cabers being used by women contestants.  Smaller cabers will be used by all in the first round and larger cabers will be used in subsequent round(s).
Tie breakers will consist of single-elimination round of three tosses each of the largest caber size for that particular sex. Tie breaking rounds shall continue until a single winner is determined.

Keg Toss

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MBlFy64i18

Competitors will be issued three kegs which will be placed at a set distance from an unsecured PVC pipe supported by pegs protruding from two upright posts similar to a high-jump bar.
Kegs will be provided and must be used by all competitors to ensure consistency. Men will throw an empty 15.5 gallon “half barrel.” Women may choose to throw an empty 7.75 “quarter barrel” instead.
The first round will start with the bar at approximately 8’ above the ground.  Competitors will be allowed two tosses to clear the bar without knocking it off.  If the competitor clears the bar on the first toss, they advance to the next round and the second toss is not taken.
For the second round, the bar will be raised to between 9 and 10’ depending on the number of contestants remaining. Competitors will again be allowed two tosses to clear the bar without knocking it off.  If the competitor clears the bar on the first toss, they advance to the next round and the second toss is not taken
Rounds will continue with the bar being raised between 1 to 2’ higher with each successive round until a single winner is determined.

Hammer Toss

The hammer toss will be similar to a carnival game in order to incorporate both strength and skill into the event.
Sledge hammers will be provided for throwing and women will be allowed to throw a lighter hammer than the men.
Competitors will rotate turns through three separate rounds. Male competitors will first throw from a 15 foot distance during the first round, a 25 foot distance during the second round and a 40 foot distance during the third round. Female competitors will first throw from a 10 foot distance during the first round, a 20 foot distance during the second round and a 30 foot distance during the third round.
Competitors will be given three hammers to throw at four logs placed on pedestals and spaced evenly.  Competitors will score points for knocking each log off the pedestal.  Point will be scored only when the logs are caused to fall due to the direct contact of the hammer or shaft to the log rather than the log hitting the pedestal.  Should the hammer hitting the pedestal cause a log(s) to fall, the log shall be replaced on the pedestal by the official but the throw will not be allowed to be re-taken.
Hammers may be thrown either overhead or underhand but shall only be allowed to move in a straight line towards the target during the backswing and release.  At no time shall hammers be swung around the body or in any plane other than described above.
Competitors will be allowed one step prior to throwing, however at all times one foot must remain planted.  A competitor stepping over the foul line before the hammer is released shall result in that particular throw being worth zero points.  Any logs knocked down on a throw from a foot-fault shall be replaced and not scored.
Tie breakers will consist of single-elimination rounds and shall continue until a single winner is determined.
